tiens à remercier tout ceux qui ont pris le temps de s’arrêter sur ce récit d’une quête infructueuse, faite d’espoirs et de déceptions. mes remerciements vont également à ceux qui ont défendu, parfois avec la passion qu’inspire le sujet, des analyses divergentes des miennes et qui ont fait vivre au travers de leurs commentaires un débat toujours salutaire. les curieux sont invités désormais à se tourner vers un très vaste monde (changement d’affectation oblige) celui des énergies, et vers d’autres batailles, celles engagées pour s’assurer leur contrôle et leur acheminement. nerf de la guerre un jeune palestinien de 12 ans et un jeune israélien du même âge résidant dans une colonie et des conséquences juridiques qui en découlent: détention de douze heures dans un cas, d’au moins de quatre jours dans un autre. la différence de traitement se poursuit si on examine l’accès à un avocat et la longueur de la détention sans charges : ces différences s’accroissent encore s’agissant de la hearts and minds of millions. but progress with the palestinians is a powerful way to begin, while sidelining extremists who thrive on conflict and division. second, peace is just. there is no question that israel has faced palestinian factions who turned to terror, and leaders who missed historic opportunities. that is why security must be at the center of any agreement. and there is no question that the only path to peace is through negotiation. that is why, despite the criticism we’ve received, the united states will oppose unilateral efforts to bypass negotiations through the united nations. but the palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized. put yourself in their shoes – look at the world through their eyes. it is not fair that a palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of her own, and lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements of her parents every single day. it is not just when settler violence against palestinians goes unpunished. it is not right to prevent palestinians from farming their lands; to restrict a student’s ability to move around the west bank; or to displace palestinian families from their home. neither occupation nor expulsion is the answer. just as israelis built a state in their homeland, palestinians have a right to be a free people in their own land. a
